ALP expecting Lakemba to swing

Labor's candidate in the Sydney seat of Lakemba is bracing for a strong swing against the party in this weekend's by-election.

Both the ALP and Liberal candidates say they have encountered sympathy for the previous member, Golden Goose Shoes Morris Iemma, who held the seat with a 34 per cent margin before his forced resignation as premier and subsequent decision to quit politics.

Labor's Robert Furolo estimates he http://www.vogueforme.com/ has doorknocked more than a 1,000 homes so far, and says he is not taking anything for granted.

"We are expecting a swing against us in the seat," he said.

"My job at the moment is to get out and meet as many people as I can."

Mr Furolo is hoping the sentiment for the former premier will help at the polls.

"There is still strong affection for Morris in the local community," he said.

But the Liberals' Michael Hawatt believes it could just as Golden Goose Sneakers easily translate to votes against Labor.

"I think what his party did to him has upset a lot of people Golden Goose Sale as well," he said.

"For the first time you hear people saying, 'Well I voted Labor but I'm not voting for them this time'."

Labor is expected to retain the seat, but Mr Hawatt says it is unpredictable and a strong swing against the ALP could just get him across the line.
