As South Africa's first democratically elected president, Madiba was honoured by numerous educational institutions with honorary doctorates for leading the team that realised the peaceful transition to democracy through negotiations. In 1998, Harvard University in the US held a special convocation ceremony for Madiba, where an honorary doctorate was conferred upon him.

At Jacaranda FM, Project Khanya was started in the spirit of celebrating the education legacy left by Madiba, to provide light to young learners in need without access to study lamps at home.
