A HAIRDRESSER from Central in Port Elizabeth is one of two finalists representing the Eastern Cape at the Sofn’free Masters Challenge in Johannesburg.

The competition, which airs on SABC1, on Thursdays, sees stylists from around the country take part in a R100000 competition that will crown South Africa’s best hairdresser.

There are 14 finalists, including East London contestant Lenette Liverson.

Abby Mandula, owner of Abby’s Beauty Salon, has been doing hair for 15 years, working her way up from hair salons in the townships, to Kabega Park and Greenacres, until she opened her own salon in 2010.

“My clientele was growing. I saw that as an opportunity to open my own space, grow my own business and develop my skills as a hairdresser,” she said.

The competition, now in its third stage (of four), will see Mandula in a Style-Off Challenge with the other Eastern Cape contestant to qualify for the finale – a full week in Johannesburg next month.

Zukiswa Mahlauli, a loyal customer of six years, said if anyone knew how to do hair in the Bay, it was Mandula.

“Abby knows before I do what I’m going to do with my hair. She’s not like any other hairdresser. She’s warm and kind but also sets boundaries for her clients.

“When I get married I will fly her to the wedding venue to do my hair. When she appears on TV, I jump and tell everyone that’s my stylist,” Mahlauli said.

Contestants will be required to tackle seven different hairdressing challenges. The stylist with the lowest score will be sent home each day. The remaining seven finalists will compete on stage at a live event for the coveted title of Sofn’free HairXpert.

The final will be held in February. Nomazima Nkosi
