South African President Nelson Mandela smile after receiving his Officer of Order of Canada in Ottawa, Canada.

The family of former president Nelson Mandela wants to stop a Democratic Alliance ad from airing.

It's laid a formal complaint with the Independent Electoral Commission and the Advertising Standards Authority.

In the controversial ad the DA uses Mandela's voice to call for peace and change.

The family has described the ad as a manipulation of Madiba's name.

The Mandelas maintain that if he were alive, the former statesman would never support the DA.
