June 2015 isn’t one to forget easily.

Celebrities including Wizkid, Fuse ODG and Yemi Alada led other Africans to voice their displeasure at BET organisers for awarding Best International Act (Africa) ‘backstage’ – a ceremony that holds nearly 24 hours before major show.

Then, Ghana’s Stonebwoy had just been crowned BET African best ahead of Sarkodie, Yemi Alade, Davido, Fally Ipupa, WizkidThe Soil and AKA. It caused frenzy in households, TV, and on social media.

Four months later (October 2015) during a chat session with Ghana’s Hitz FM, Stone refuted the claims, saying; ‘So many people saw me on television, live on Lala Anthony, I don’t know any word which says prerecorded is backstage.

‘We even want to perform on the BET stages, and even on the GRAMMY stages and any other prestigious stage which has an African category in there, that is my dream and my wish, I don’t only want to receive awards on stages.’

This year, Africans rather showered praise on new champ Black Coffee, who’s made South Africans proud for clinching the gong. He was greeted with a standing ovation from fellow nominees Cassper Nyovest as his name was announced

On the other hand, Nigeria’s Falz also won the Viewer’s Choice: ‘Best New International Act’ during the night where Akon was honoured with ‘Global Good’ Award at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles – hosted by American actress Eva Marcille and Jidenna.

Now that Africans have moved on from condemning BET ‘Backstage’ credit, let’s sit and have some tea as we await to biggest award show of the month.
