Municipalities countrywide are owed about R119 billion by residents, business and government departments.

At the 10th Annual National Municipal Managers’ Forum this week, Salga discussed how service delivery has been hampered by debtors who fail to pay accounts.

More than 60 municipalities owe about R5 billion to Eskom and water boards.

Salga spokesperson Tahir Sema says collecting funds due to municipalities would enable them to pay off their own debt.

“Some of our municipalities, 40 in total, have defaulted with regard to paying their Eskom bills we need to ensure that we recoup that money so we can pay some of our debts.”

Sema says the organisation is discussing measures to ensure revenue collection is more effective.
