How vloggers can use social media to promote their vlogging channel.

Getting more views and subscribers on YouTube is not a complicated process. While it can seem difficult (or just like it’s purely a matter of luck) to a lot of people, if you know how to promote your YouTube channel and your vlogs on social media, you’ll watch your views and subscriptions jump dramatically.

Just follow a few best practices and tips for using Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites for your vlogging channel, and you’ll be on your way!

Give Viewers a Reason to Follow You on Social Media

First of all, you need to give your YouTube viewers a reason to follow you on social media, and that means giving them unique content that they won’t get anywhere else. It also means that you need to avoid posting too much repeat content across different social media platforms.

For example, people might follow you on Instagram for behind-the-scenes images and sneak peeks of stills from your upcoming YouTube vlogs. Don’t just always cross-post those pictures to Facebook, though, or your followers won’t see any reason to follow you on both networks.

While it’s okay to do some cross-posting for viewers who don’t follow you on all of your social media sites, be sure to post unique content on each. On Facebook, you could link to your latest blog posts and take viewer opinion polls. On Twitter, you could hint at what’s to come in the next YouTube vlog. On Tumblr, you could post a brief discussion of one element of your last video (with the video embedded in your Tumblr post). You get the idea.

Link to Your Playlist in Your Bio

Now, promoting your YouTube channel on social media isn’t just about what you post. It’s also an opportunity for you to let people know who you are and what you do on your channel. Don’t miss the chance to write a great portfolio and bio on each and every social media site you use. In addition to writing a great bio, though, you should always post links to your videos wherever possible and appropriate.

Instead of just linking to your YouTube channel, your first video, or a random vlog, though, make a playlist of your “top hits”. Link to the playlist of your most popular YouTube videos, and new viewers will be hooked! This is a great way to get more views on YouTube.

Use Hashtags to Extend Your Reach

When you use trending and popular hashtags that relate to your vlog content, your social media posts get put in the same category with all of the other posts that have those categories. Viewers search through their favourite hashtags for fun and interesting posts from users that they don’t already follow.

When you use hashtags on social media, you can instantly gain a lot more exposure. People who don’t follow you and don’t even follow your followers could suddenly be liking and sharing your YouTube videos. Never underestimate the power of a few good hashtags (avoid using too many).

Encourage Your Viewers to Share Your Videos

Whether you do it within your vlog as you sign off with your video outro or you write it in your social media post, don’t hesitate to encourage your viewers to share your YouTube videos. You can say something like, “If you liked this video, share it with your friends and see what they have to say!” A call to action like this gives your audience something to do. It shows them that they can help you out, and because they like your vlogs and your YouTube channel, they’ll be interested in doing so.

Why do you want your viewers to share your YouTube vlogs on social media? When your followers share your content, their followers will see it, and when some of their followers share it, those people’s followers will see it, and so on. Much like hashtags, shares get you a lot of exposure very quickly.

And you can encourage more sharing by showing appreciation for your followers when they share your YouTube videos. Almost every social media site will send you a notification when someone shares your content. When you get that notification, go ahead and thank that person for sharing or make a note of it and give them a shout-out in your next vlog. When other viewers see this, they’ll be even more likely to keep sharing.

Twitter Chats

Speaking of hashtags, you can also set up a Twitter chat by scheduling a specific time when you and other chat participants (your viewers and fans) will be online and active on Twitter. Make sure to decide on an official hashtag for your Twitter chat. For example, the hashtag could be your YouTube channel name followed by “chat”. You can then ask your viewers questions and encourage them to reply using the chat hashtag.

When you search for your Twitter Chat hashtag, you can see Tweets associated with your chat start popping up in real time. The effect is really cool, and you can really engage and interact with your followers on a whole new level when you do this.

Start a Google+ Community

Google+ is growing more popular every day. By creating a Google+ community, you can give your vlog viewers a productive space in which to discuss topics that are relevant to your YouTube channel and their related interests. They can post images, make suggestions, ask questions, and more.

Maintain a Tumblr Blog

Tumblr is probably one of the most underrated social networks out there right now. A lot of people use it, and it’s perfect for sharing with its easy “re-blog” options. This powerful and expanding micro-blogging platform lets you share your videos along with short-form blog posts to get more people watching and sharing them with their friends. Not only can you discuss your vlogs more in-depth, but you can also create a lot more relevant content for your YouTube community with Tumblr blog posts.

Choose the Best Social Networks for Your Audience

Finally, with so many social networks to choose from, you might be thinking, “Do I really need to be involved in ALL of them?” It’s totally up to you! You should, however, find out where your viewers hang out online the most and focus on those networks in particular.

For example, beauty vloggers will find a lot of success with image-based networks like Pinterest and Instagram. The tech world is all over Twitter, so tech vloggers should all have active Twitter presences. Almost everyone in the world, it seems, is on Facebook, so no matter what you vlog about you should consider having a Facebook page.
